Dance - the Hidden Language of the Soul

“Dance is the movement of universe concentrated in an individual.”
-Isadora Duncan

Now-a-days, people have got many ways to communicate; to express their emotions and thoughts, thanks to the advanced technology! But, of course, in the old days, there were no phones or any other gadgets...so were the people able to communicate back then? Well…the answer is a yes; dance made it possible...

And to this day, the age-old practise of expressing feelings through body movement continues, many dancers continue to express their feelings through the best way they know- Dance. As for me, I am one of them. From my childhood, I had always found it very fascinating. I never attended a dance class since I liked the concept of ‘self- teaching’ as I was inspired by one of the greatest icons of pop, Michael Jackson, who was primarily self-taught and made his own dance moves. But the choice of not having a formal learning was a wrong one and it is still one of the many decisions that I regret. But I started to learn various dance forms from Youtube. From the mudras of Kathak to the basic Ballet steps…Youtube has taught me many things. I like most of the dance styles, of which Kathak and Ballet are my most favourite ones.  But I absolutely don’t go with hip hop and other energetic styles. I am very bad at them.

Ballet, which began during the Italian Renaissance, is a dance form which I find very pleasing to the eye. I love the pointe shoes worn by the dancers. Its by far, the most difficult dance form according to me. Years of dedication and practise are essential to master this style. Some famous ballet dancers are Natala Osipova, Carlos Acosta and Misty Copeland.

Whereas, Kathak is an Indian dance form originated in Northern India. The tinkling of the ghungroos, the vibrant sarees of the female dancers, the melodious rhythm of the various instruments, the hand mudras and the expressions of the dancers takes this dance style to another level. Some famous maestros of this dance style are Birju Maharaj, Aditi Mangaldas and Rani Karnaa. Mangaldas came to our school for her amazing dance performance on the occasion of ‘Spic Macay’ conducted two years back.

Dancing also acts like a stress buster for many, including me. I strongly suggest that if you had a bad day and your mood is off then shut the door of your room, play some nice numbers, increase the volume and just dance it out! I am pretty sure it will work. Life gets much better when you dance. Dancing with the feet is one thing and dancing with the heart is another. Dance can be your greatest teacher. You always turn in a better version of yourself when you dance. And as they say it ‘Life isn’t about waiting for the rain storm to pass…its about dancing in the rain.’ After all, dance is just an Art in motion…

Usually, dance expresses our thoughts but this time I expressed my thoughts for Dance! May this beautiful medium continue to captivate many for eternity!
